Demonstration and Selection of Improved Varieties of “Huamoxiang” Held in Ezhou

Lead: On March 1, the demonstration and selection of improved varieties of Huamoxiang was held in Ezhou. Zhang Qifa, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stressed on the meeting that whole grain black rice was a new realm of rice research, in which Huamoxiang series were “rising stars” for people’s healthy diets. Therefore, the rice research team would continue to devote themselves to the research, development and promotion of food that was healthy for human beings.

Qiu Shi, together with some professors of HZAU and other directors and representatives from relevant institutions, enterprises, entities and major farming households attended the meeting.
Fang Yongli, director of the Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in Ezhou , said in his speech that they would fully support the implementation and commercialization of the Huamoxiang series in Ezhou. They would spare no efforts to ensure the orderly HZAU-government-enterprises cooperation by integrating available resources.
Professor Zhang Qifa gave a special report on “Contributing to Healthy Food for both Human Beings.: the rice farming method in the New era”. The report had four parts: definition of healthy food, from supper green rice to green agriculture, the new model of rice farming “green rice and green aquatic products” and the rice farming method in the New era. Approaching the topic with the history of modern rice in China, he said that high yield remained scientists’ goal from the 1960s to 2000, while since this century, they had started to explore the sustainable development model that was resource-saving and environmentally friendly. In the future, China’s rice research and production would strive for further improvements: green, nutritious and healthy. He said that several years of try and error had shown that whole grain black rice was a new realm of rice research, in which Huamoxiang series were “rising stars” for people’s healthy diets. Therefore, the rice team will continue to deepen their cooperation with Ezhou and devote themselves to further research, development and promotion of food that is healthy for human beings.
Cao Yinglong, general manager of Hubei Shuangshui Shuanglu Biotechnology Co., Ltd., introduced the planting mode, technology and rules of Huamoxiang, and signed a framework cooperation agreement with some companies like Hubei Huayuan Grain and Oil Co., Ltd.
“How is the output of Huamoxiang ?” “How to ensure a whole-process green farming?” “What should we stress in the processing?” “What about the profits?” Directors and representatives from relevant institutions, enterprises, and major farming households were very interested in the production, processing and sales of Huamoxiang, and they exchanged a lot with from Zhang Qifa.
Qiu Shi said that Huamoxiang series were of great significance to grain production in Ezhou, especially to the promotion of improved variety breeding. He hoped that through government’s endless efforts, two-sides sincere cooperation could help the coordinated and sustainable development of agriculture in Ezhou. He expressed that local government would actively support HZAU-government-enterprises cooperation and solve difficulties appeared tirelessly. It would also take the initiative to provide services necessary for enterprises, make sure to respect the rules of the market in order to give full play to its decisive role in resource allocation, and finally work as the best waiter who successfully introduces Huamoxiang to Ezhou.

In the afternoon, Zhang Qifa and his team also went to some places for conducting field research, discussing the implementation and cooperation of Huamoxiang in Ezhou.
The Huamoxiang series are new whole-grain black rice varieties developed by Zhang’ s team. In recent years, the team has devoted itself to the realization of new black rice as staple food, aiming to improve nutrition, cooking ways and taste. Huamoxiang series are welcomed by consumers for its above advantages.
