Student-centered HZAU “Summons” Students with Low BMI

Prompt: Recently, a post made HZAU a trending topic, liked by most netizens. A male college student from HZAU posted that he was “summoned” by school officials for he has a BMI less than normal according to physical fitness test. He mentioned that he was 1.7 m tall but weighed only 48 kg. Thus, the university officials showed their immediate and warm-hearted care, and said that they would like to offer help if the student’s family was struggling financially.

On April 14, one of the staff from the Financial Aid Center of HZAU said this year they provided targeted financial aid based on BMI of students in the hope of better helping economically disadvantaged students, according to the reporter from Jimu News.

On April 11, the student posted the chat history with his counsellor, which was a message of concern: “We’d like to know more about your low BMI and will provide aid if it is because of financial difficulties.”

The student stated that he was so touched, owing the low BMI and weight loss to reduced appetite caused by some downs before. Luckily, his appetite has returned to normal now, even better.

As soon as the post went viral, many network users “liked” such special “conversation”. Some netizens commented: “HZAU is so heartwarming,” “university officials care so much about students’ health.”

Mr. Sun, a staff from the Center told the reporter that HZAU would conduct physical health tests for students every semester, and this year was the first time to provide targeted financial aid based on BMI. They usually got the list of students  with low BMI from the information center, then verified and made appointments with some from disadvantaged backgrounds by contacting their counselors.

HZAU wanted to know if these underweight students had financial difficulties, which led to malnutrition. If so, the university would provide assistance, according to Sun.

“We fully understand that some students’ reluctance to share financial information with each other,” Sun noted, “That’s why we are trying to target students with domestic difficulties and provide targeted assistance after analyzing different data and having further conversation.”

Having a relatively sound aid system, HZAU also would help students with their ability and competence enhancement by conducting relevant training, apart from financial support.
