On May 6th, the final of the 2023 Science Popularization Speech Contest was held at the Student Comprehensive Service Building, co-hosted by the Museum, Youth League Committee, and Association of Sci-technology for College Students of HZAU.
The panel of judges includes Qin Rui (Dean from the Office of Scientific Research and Development of South-Central Minzu University), Nie Hailin (Vice-Curator of Hubei Science and Technology Museum), Liu Xianguo (Curator of Yifu Museum Of China University Of Geosciences), Du Chun (from Department of Science and Technology of Hubei Province), Meilin (from Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Sun Anne (from Meteorological Service Centre of Hubei Province, and Feng Nan (Director from Office of Cultural Promotion of HZAU).
In his address, Vice President Yao Jianglin presented HZAU’s achievements in science popularization and technological innovation, and emphasized science popularization as a critical basis of technological innovation. He hoped that competition organizers would continue to hold Science Popularization Speech Contest, making it a major annual event in HZAU that greatly attracts students and teachers and brings positive influence to the society. Besides, he expected that our university’s scientific and technological workers could dedicate to scientific endeavors and jointly promote the high-quality development of science popularization at HZAU by leveraging their own superiority and expertise.
Under the theme of “Sci-Tech Innovation: Popularizing Science as a Forerunner”, a fierce final competition unfolded among 22 contestants, each possessing profound professional knowledge and scientific theories.
Shao Yuanyuan, who majors in applied chemistry at the College of Science, showed an interesting magic trick to introduce the concept of “turning used oils into useful cleaner”, emphasizing the importance of integrating theoretical knowledge with our daily life. Not only did she elucidate the origins of soap, the saponification reaction, and the principles of stain removal, but she also motivated each student to create their own soap using waste oil.
“Do you really understand gears?” asked by Cai Jiayi, a student from the College of Engineering. This simple question prompted a profound exploration of the substantial role that gears play in driving China's industrial development. Yin Wanting, from the College of Horticulture & Forestry Sciences, told the secret behind the eternal vitality of Dunhuang frescoes. Accompanied by the colorful images and the soothing classical music, Yin gently narrated the glory days of the Tang Dynasty, creating an immersive experience for the audience.
As one of the judges, Sun Anne said, “I was impressed by these presentations, which are informative, interesting and inspiring. Their science popularization materials were not only aesthetically appealing but also pragmatic, effectively upholding the scientific spirit.”
The winners of this competition are eligible to represent HZAU in provincial and municipal competitions, where they will have the opportunity to share our stories of technological innovation with society.
