On the afternoon of May 13, the second plenary meeting (expanded meeting) of the 8th Horticulture Discipline Appraisal Group was held at HZAU. About forty scholars and teachers attended the plenum, including the convener of the Discipline Appraisal Group (Academician Deng Xiuxin of HZAU and Academician Zou Xuexiao of Hunan Agricultural University), the invited experts (Li Tianlai of Shenyang Agricultural University, Liu Zhonghua of Hunan Agricultural University, and Yu Jingquan of Zhejiang University, Zhang Youjun of Institute of Vegetable and Flower, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Wan Xiaochun of Anhui Agricultural University), the members of the Discipline Appraisal Group (Han Zhenhai of China Agricultural University, Ma Fengwang of Northwest A&F University, Wang Yuefei of Zhejiang University, Guo Wenwu of HZAU), and Yan Jianbing, Vice-President of HZAU, and other scholars.

At the plenum, Professor Yan Jianbing delivered a welcome speech. He said that HZAU was grounded in China’s reality while adopting a global perspective, focused on “The Top Priorities of the Country” to find the gap between the world’s first-class universities and HZAU. Taking discipline construction as the core competitiveness, HZAU formed a new pattern of discipline development with complete disciplines, outstanding advantages and unique features. He pointed out that as one of the HZAU’s five national disciplines included in the “double world-class project”, the horticulture discipline has made remarkable achievements in terms of talent training, scientific research, social services and international cooperation and exchange, and it has been selected as a part of the new round of national action plan for development of the first-class disciplines. The approval of the National Key Laboratory for Germplasm Innovation & Utilization of Horticultural Crops will bring new opportunities for discipline construction. He hoped that all teachers and students majoring in horticulture listen to opinions and suggestions of the Discipline Appraisal Group on disciplines, degree program and talent training. Based on consensus and innovative power, they should study and promote innovation in system and methods of horticulture discipline construction to solve the bottleneck problems.

After that, Professor Wang Yuefei (secretary of the Discipline Appraisal Group) conveyed the guiding principles of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education, and systematically summarized the current situation of the Discipline Appraisal Group in discipline construction, talent training and platform establishment. He put forward that in the first year of the 20th National Congress of the CPC, the Discipline Appraisal Group should take the initiative to follow the guidance of the Party Central Committee and promote high-quality horticulture construction. The participants discussed the key problems and exchanged views on the degree program, the operation mechanism of the Discipline Appraisal Group, the disciplines construction and the key tasks in the next stage.

Academician Deng Xiuxin emphasized that the Discipline Appraisal Group has made great efforts on the construction of the first-level horticulture discipline and headway of the postgraduate education reform, achieving fruitful achievements. He stressed that the Discipline Appraisal Group should further optimize its decision-making mechanism and make more investigations to understand and grasp the realities involved in essential work such as the first-level discipline doctoral authorization. He added that the members of the Discipline Appraisal Group should further promote interdisciplinary integration, continuously strengthen the top-level design of discipline construction centered on the major strategic needs at the national level and the actual industrial development.
