Members of Global Food Security Association for Young Scientists Participate in 3rd WFF in Rome

From October 16 to 20, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held the 3rd World Food Forum (WFF) in Rome on the theme “Agrifood system transformation accelerates climate action”. Li Xiaoyun (professor of the College of Economics and Management and president of the Global Food Security Association for Young Scientists) and Hao Zhuang (associate professor of the college and one of the members of the Secretariat of the association) were invited to attend the forum. During the forum, they exchanged their ideas with experts at home and abroad. This forum aims to review global efforts and progresses made on the development of the agrifood system transformation and provide an effective platform for communications among farmers, students, scientists and entrepreneurs.
Our members participated in sub-forums on topics including “Agricultural Science and Technology Policy and Assessment”, “the Resilience of Global Agrifood System”, “Young Scientists Roundtable”, and “New Ideas for Rural Innovation and Entrepreneurship”. In the forum on the Resilience of Global Agrifood System, based on her expertise and research projects, Prof. Li comprehensively analyzed the resilience of food systems in China and other developing countries, pointed out challenges and opportunities in China’s food system in light of the increasing uncertainties in the global food market, and shared her opinions with other scientists from developing countries.

Members of the association, along with experts such as Zhao Zhihai and Hu Chunsheng from the grain team led by Wang Huijun, President of the Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences (HAAFS), attended the International Year of Millets forum during the event. This was made possible through an invitation extended by Xia Jingyuan, an alumnus of HZAU and Director of the Plant Production and Protection Division of FAO. This forum discussed how to expand the international market and the influence of seeds from China under the Belt and Road Initiative. In the end, Prof. Li expressed her gratitude to Xia for his support for the establishment of the association. In addition, Li and Hao visited Maximo Torero Cullen, chief economist of FAO, discussing the achievements made by China in food security. On behalf of the association, they invited Maximo to attend the upcoming 2nd World Food Security Forum for Young Scientists. Maximo accepted this invitation and agreed to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony.

Li is present at the the forum of the International Year of Millets.

The association was launched by HZAU, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Centro Internacional de Mejoramientode Maizy Trigo (CIMMYT) and Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Development in Transformation Economies (IAMO), aiming to unite global scientists who focus and study on food security to jointly address challenges in this regard. The second forum, scheduled to take place at HZAU from October 28th to 29th, has garnered participation from esteemed academics from various countries, including China, Bangladesh, Brazil, Germany, Indonesia, Mexico, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Peru and Vietnam.
